Here we are it’s Boxing Day, and looking out the window, I see we have had some snow overnight. - so no bike riding today. Thankfully the weather stayed good for Christmas day, we hope that you all had a wonderful time with family and friends, and that Santa was good to you.
Out on the West Coast, the Traditional Boxing Day Trial will soon be taking place at Ioco - although I’ve never attended this annual event, we did hold at least one such Fun Trial in the Valley when I lived in Kelowna, and of course there are lots of Clubs in the UK that host Trials on boxing day. many of which start from the local pub yard, so it’s a chance for riders to join in with the Christmas Spirit.

It was nice to receive a copy of Max King’s book on Trials riding from Rob Stobart, and while the old book has many loose pages, Rob sent it out on loan, after I mentioned this being my “Bible” as a teenager getting into the sport. - This is not the original edition, which came out in 1954, but never -the-less. - I’m sure it proved invaluable for enthusiasts in the early 70’s.

This copy has a chapter written by Mick Andrews, on Trials in America - Mick was still with Ossa at the time, but you could tell by his comments, that he was already aware of the Japanese invasion, and may have already been in contact with Yamaha. - This was an exciting time for the sport, as first Yamaha, then Honda, Suzuki and Kawasaki all introduced Trials models. - Sadly the expected American sales, never happened, and the Japs were left with huge inventories of unsold bikes.

As has been well documented on my blog, I was well and truly hooked on the sport again, after a few years getting used to life in Canada, and was a regular contributor to Trials Canada and other publications, plus it wasn’t long before I joined Yamaha Canada, and put on the first Mick Andrews Trials demonstration at Blackfoot Park in Calgary.

A lot of water has gone under the bridge since Max King wrote his first book - he talked about the demise of the British motorcycle Industry, and it’s interesting to note that few could have predicted the almost complete economic failure of the Japanese to make an impact on the market. The numbers required to keep the Japanese factories churning out Trials models, just didn’t happen.

It’s Christmas day - Have a Happy Holiday Everyone. - More Blog Tomorrow.>>>

Tuesday December 24th 2013

Tuesday, December 24th, 2013

I thought this Classic Christmas card would be perfect for all our Vintage Trials enthusiasts - the Yamaha TY series of bikes, certainly introduced a lot of families to our great sport, with many still showing up at our Outlaw Trial.

We have been sending and receiving  lots of emails and cards from friends and family from all over, and with the big day, now only hours away, the frantic last minute gift buying will be in full swing today. - Fortunately the weather here in the Okanagan is quite mild, unlike some places across the country. - We sincerely hope that all our regular readers have a safe and Happy Holiday.

And here’s a Christmas Greeting from our UK Contact Heath Brindley on the JTG

Friday December 20th 2013

Friday, December 20th, 2013

Thank goodness we are back to normal at the Outlaw hide-a-way - new windows in, and my office back in operation - strange how we all get so used to working on computers that you go into a kind of shell shock mode without access to the internet etc - no wonder the kids of today can’t survive without their I-phones - we are all addicted to this modern technology.

==========================================>

With all the renovations going on, the Christmas tree and decorations are still not up, and in fact, last night we talked about maybe not bothering this year, As we get older, we have few visitors, and it really is a chore, plus the expense. - Did I hear someone say “Humbug” ? - Of course the weather effects any trips into Town, and I see we have snow in the forecast for pretty much all next week, so just getting out of the driveway becomes a hassle.

===========================================>

On a brighter note, we appear to have been able to help Santa supply quite a few Trials riders again this year - whether they were naughty or nice we don’t know. - but many will be very happy come Christmas Day. - The Steve Saunders book, will be a popular gift for lots of people, we are in fact still trying to fill back-orders on these.
===========================================>

We noticed that Heath of r2w fame in the UK had another birthday this week, and received a personalized bottle of Jack Daniels ! What a thoughtful gift that was - that’s a brand I’ve never sampled.  ( And not likely to now) - Other birthdays happening this week, are  Bob Clark of Mountain Motorcycles and a few others that Face-book list for me. - Not sure if all this personal info: that’s available on the web is a good idea or not. - I seem to spend a lot of time deleting spam, and figuring out the latest scams that come via email. - The most recent, is that my email is going to be cut off unless I click here etc.

Franzi Kadlec – Germany’s got talent

Jitsie is proud to announce the continuation of the partnership with Franzi Kadlec for the next couple of seasons.

Kadlec switches to the factory Beta team for 2014 as he makes the Junior World title one of his major goals for next season along with the German title. Young Franzi Kadlec, who turned 16 years old mid 2013, made a remarkable entry on the international scene winning the European youth championship as well as scoring podiums in the European championship. Although the rules forced Kadlec to compete on a 125 bike in the German championship, he still managed to climb the final podium step in the final standings.

Kadlec will be using the new Jitsie HT2 carbon fibre helmet that was recently launched as well as the entire range of Jitsie T2 apparel. For more info about Franzi and Jitsie, please visit www.jitsie.com or follow Jitsie on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter (@jitsiecom).

With the Tradesmen still working at my place fitting new windows - any office work is once again limited - Hopefully we will be back to normal by tomorrow.

My trip to Kelowna yesterday went well - delivering Opti Oil and got to chat to our old friends at C & S Printers - I can recommend these good folks for all your printing needs. - They supply all our outlaw stuff, plus all the Trials cards & arrows at big discounts.

As most people know, we started the Ady Brown Memorial Trial a few years ago, to honor our old buddy who died of Cancer, and since that time, have collected about $2,000 for the cause. - This year, we also raised $1,000.  for the Diabetes Foundation, so at this time of giving, I would like to thank all the riders who came to our events, and supported these great Charities.

Without doubt, Motorcyclists in general have big hearts when it comes to helping those less fortunate, and yesterday I learned of one local dealer, Kelowna Yamaha, who gave a new mini-bike to a youngster, who had his bike stolen - here is a pic of Terry Poirier the owner, with the young lad picking up his new Yamaha - We should add that Terry also now handles our Beta Enduro bikes, so if you are interested in one of these, why not give them a call.

================================================>

The weather in the Valley has turned colder again, with a temperature of -9 this morning - still quite balmy compared to Alberta - We heard from Marris in Fort Mac - who said his new Beta is still in the crate and with a low of -37 today in the North Country, that’s probably the best place for it.

A skiff of snow overnight made the roads slick this morning - I had to do an early drive into town to drop off Babs car for some service work - Naturally a lot of the commuters  had no idea that the unploughed, un-sanded country roads were a sheet of ice. !! - Not sure where some people learn to drive.

============================================>

Not a lot happening in the World of Motorcycle sport - and as we have guys coming in today to fit new windows , and my office is in a turmoil, - I will cut the blog short. - Strange how some of these tradesmen can only schedule jobs like this in the winter !!!!

Tuesday, December 17th, 2013

We have heard from Ron Walsh of the CPTA regarding the BCORMA News Release that we reported recently, concerning Squamish. - It appears, that any new Resort development, will have no effect on the area used by the club for their Trials events, as this is all private land, and the proposed project is quite a bit North of this location. - Good News indeed, in these trying times of land use problems.

Glad to say that in the Okanagan we are seeing more spots opening up for Trials use - with local clubs anxious to have WTC events on their Calendar. -

===========================================>

With the Christmas Holiday just one week away - a lot of last minute shopping will be in full swing - every year we try to help out with Santa’s wish list for Trials riders. But a reminder that we are now in panic mode when it comes to either mail or bus shipments.

===========================================>

If the good weather holds in the Okanagan - we will plan on getting out for a Boxing day fun ride at Bear Ridge - call me if you want to know more about this early next week. - The CPTA will be holding their annual Boxing Day Trial at Ioco - details can be seen on the club website.

============================================>

As reported earlier, David Knight (Sherco) took the overall win at the World Indoor Enduro in Poland, beating out hometown favorite Taddy Blazusiak (KTM) and Dani Gilbert (Husaberg)  - British gal Jane Daniels (KTM) won the ladies event, while Emma Bristow finished off the podium in 4th place. ( Laia Sanz did not attend)

More news as it happens >>>>>

Just saw this pic on face book - It’s a Welsh Cafe in the “Blaeno Ffestiniog”  area - a pass over the Berwyn Mountains that was used in the 1954 ISDT if I remember correctly - just a rough track back then.

Monday December 16th 2013

Monday, December 16th, 2013

Well we couldn’t have wished for a better day to test the new 2014 Beta on Sunday - Although we still have snow on the ground in Vernon, our riding area near Kelowna, was completely dry, as Matt & myself pulled into the parking area - plus the sun was shining and the temperature was a fantastic +6.

After warming up the Evo, it was time to check out the sections nearby, before taking the narrow twisty trail up to the fence line - although the ground was frozen, we had no trouble with traction - you just had to be careful with the throttle. - The new bike seems to have more power than the 2013, and as can be expected, worked flawlessly. - We did all our usual sections, with only the odd dab - before heading over to the point, high up above the lake - we did run through some snow at this level, but nothing to worry about - it just made the sections more challenging, but again the little Beta excelled. - I took quite a lot of video & pics - coaching Matt along the way, which really helped him grab some nice “Cleans”

Here’s a shot of the old guy on one of our tricky sections up in the top gulley - some light snow on the frozen corner, that has a root to catch you out, if not perfectly lined up  - I had no problem here and got away with a clean first time     ( must have been the bike).

As you can see from this shot - it was a perfect day to be up on the ridge, overlooking Okanagan Lake.

The 2014 Outlaw Evo 200 - all blinged up & ready for the Test. - as you can see - no snow. !!

Sunday December 15th 2013

Sunday, December 15th, 2013

No snow overnight & +2 degrees in Vernon, so the plan is to head down to Bear Ridge to test the new 2014 Beta Evo 200.

===============================================>

I watched some of the Hockey game last night - great result for the Cannucks, hammering old rivals Boston 6-2 - they seem to be on a roll right now winning the last seven games.

===============================================>

I saw this pic posted of Emma Bristow standing in front of the tire wall at the Polish World Indoor Enduro - It appears as though the Enduro organizers have been watching too many of the World Trials videos,  with pretty insane obstacles .

UPDATE : David Knight (Sherco) won the first race - Jane Daniels the womens event. - for more news click on the Enduro21 website. - Danny McCanney (Beta) was 3rd fastest in practice in his debut ride on the Italian bike. - We will check back later for more news.
==========================================>

I had a long chat to Jimmy Corkle yesterday, - he has been absent from the Trials scene this year, because of other projects on the go, but is looking forward to 2014. - Of course we talked about the ugly weather they have been getting in the Elk Valley - bitterly cold and high winds.- I guess we are lucky to be living up here in the “Banana Belt”.

Saturday December 14th 2013

Well we managed to survive Friday the thirteenth without incident - It was actually a gorgeous day in Vernon, with sunshine and warm temperatures - I fired up the new Beta and did some figure eights in the driveway .

Of course the next week is likely going to be pretty crazy, with people ordering last minute Christmas Presents  - the line-ups at the Post Office and bus depot will be nuts, so I’m not looking forward to that - hope the weather stays warm as forecast.. - feel sorry for the Albertan’s still freezing that side of the Rockies.

Here’s a pic of Taff, not looking too happy in the -30 temps, last week.

We’ve heard from Steve Richardson, and it seems he is quite sick at the moment - he was in emergency last week, but so far the medication doesn’t appear to be helping. - I’m sure he would be glad to hear from his old friends to cheer him up - must be lonely out on Gambier Island.

Not too much news coming out of Europe at the moment, except for the World Enduro happening this weekend in Poland - the 2014 Indoor Trials Championship kicks off in January, with the first round in Sheffield -  word has it that Martin Lampkin has been building more challenging obstacles for the event, it will be interesting to see how financially successful this is - always a big gamble for any promoter - especially in the winter.
