Sunday December 31st 2017 “New Years Eve”

Sunday, December 31st, 2017

The weather on Saturday was much better - sunshine, and no snow, but still very cold with a wind chill that kept us indoors once again. - It was another “Hockey Day” watching the Canadian juniors finishing up  with a 8-0 blowout of the Danes to take the number one spot in the “A” class. - Now they have a couple of days off, before the medal rounds.

========================================>

Looking back at the year of 2017 - it’s been a strange one, with the weather playing such a big part in most areas. - heavy snow, followed by floods then Forest Fires, curtailed a lot of outdoor activity, although we did sell quite a few bikes. - We also managed to attend events in Vancouver, Calgary, Rocky Mountain House, plus of course our annual Outlaw Trial at Scotch Creek. Then the season wrapping up at the WTC National in Malakwa.

Sadly, we lost some friends in 2017, Kelvin Marshal, Eldon Edey and Ron Harvey all passed away. While on the International stage, Nicky Hayden was tragically killed, and Bruce Brown also died.

For many younger people, New Years Eve is Party Time - and I remember that back in the UK, we would always go to the local dance. However when you get old, the last day of the year is usually spent quietly at home, and I usually go to bed, before Midnight.

This was taken a couple of years ago on New Years Eve - Wishing all our customers and friends a very Happy New Year from Team Outlaw.

Saturday, December 30th, 2017

Well, the Hockey game that was played in the snowstorm yesterday, between Canada and the USA - was certainly “Different”  - with over 40,000 fans cheering them on, the teams battled it out in almost impossible conditions, with the Yanks finally getting the win in the “Shootout” - I watched most of the game, but after Canada took the bad penalty in the 3rd, I figured ( correctly) that Canada would let Team USA back into the game, when they were leading 3-1.  ( I’m betting there were some tense moments in the dressing room at the end) - Not that all is lost as the medal games are still to come.

=======================================>

I had to take a quick trip into town yesterday afternoon, and it was a zoo, with all the snow and the roads really slippery. - As we head into the last couple of days of the year, we would like to wish all our family and friends, a very happy New Year, and thought we would post this gem of wisdom that Glen Kemp put on Face book.

Here’s our “Classic” pic for today - It shows Mick Andrews testing the 350 Ossa back in 1979  - He would later  re-sign with Yamaha .

SNOW - That is pretty much the story at the moment - this shot  taken through the front window AFTER the driveway had been plowed !! on Thursday.

With nothing much else happening, we have been watching the World Junior Hockey for most of the week  - Team Canada won their first two games, looking good and very fast - today they play the USA, who lost to the Slovaks last night - the game is being played on an outdoor rink for the first time ever, and I would pick the Canadians to take this. - If I could make a prediction ( without jinxing them) I would say that the Gold medal game will be between Canada and Finland.

This old pic just popped up on FB - The ISDE in Wales 1983 - I looked after the Canadian Yamaha Team and arranged for the loan of this Mercedes Team Truck from Mitsui UK - ( The Yamaha Importer) it had bunks and a workshop in the back.

Here is another bit of info: that most people don’t know posted by Helmut Clasen of Ontario ( multi time ISDT medal winner)

Helmut Clasen Did you know that KTM tested OPTI lubes and found it for exelend but could not go for it,because they needed a oil company large enough to sponsor KTM with all there printings.That,s why in all there books and manuals you will find ” KTM recomments VEDOL in the 60s/Shell for several years and now its the Motorex.This LARGE companies paying for there advertising and KTM in return uses there oils.

Although we don’t travel anymore - Outlaw still Distribute Opti Lubricants, and all our bikes go out with a supply of this .  Check out this recent letter from a customer of ours.

The latest word on Ted Blow. is that while he was out riding the Boxing day Trial at Ioco, the house where he was renting a basement suite caught fire, so all his belongings are gone. - His friends in the Coquitlam area and the CPTA are trying to help out,asking for donations of clothing etc. - Tough time for one of our own, who has done so much for the sport. - If you can assist in any way, please contact Mountain Motorcycles in Coquitlam.

As the oldest Family owned Manufacturer in Europe, Beta Motor have a reputation for building great Trials bikes, but they have always made other models. - The latest Poll of Enduro bikes has posted their RR300 as the “Bike of the Year”

“Well the weather outside is Frightful”   - so goes the well known Christmas song, and indeed it really is in the OK Valley at the moment, still snowing and dozens of accidents yesterday on the Hiway. ( People still need to slow down - drive for the conditions.)

=======================================>

The entry list has been completed for the 2018 Scottish, with 300 lucky riders picked out of the 500 who hoped to get a ride. - We haven’t heard if any Canadians plan on going. - We will know more when the final list is posted after the riders cough up the entry money. ( Not a cheap Holiday in the Highlands - but an unforgettable experience)

=======================================>

Just saw this old pic of Jordi on the Beta TR34 - When he was crowned “King of Trials”  - He learned a lot during his years riding the Italian bike - Maybe that is why his new TRS bike is soooo smooth.

Wednesday, December 27th, 2017

Boxing day was pretty quiet around the Outlaw residence - too cold to go out - we did have a visit from our granddaughter in the morning - then it was time to watch the junior hockey - first the Russia v Czech game - followed by the Canadians versus the Fins - both excellent with full on action & very fast.

After that it was “Happy Hour” and time for a movie - the one we watched was Dunkirk - which I found a bit disappointing  - Of course trying to capture this type of epic event on film must have been a huge challenge. - Like many, my Dad was in France at this time, his job was to drive one of the high ranking officers, and when everything went bad - he was instructed to head South from Calais to one of the other ports on the coast, where he was able to board a ship back to England.

=======================================>

I saw this nice photo of Mick and Jill Andrews, taken at the recent FIM Gala and thought it a good time to post it.

===========================================>

The weather looks like it might turn ugly for the next few days, with snow in the forecast  - Hopefully it won’t be too bad, as I have to make a trip to Kelowna to pick up a skid of Opti Oil. - ( At least the heavy snow in the mountains is good for the Snowmobile business)

===========================================>

I saw a post from Vancouver, saying that Ted Blow had a house fire, which has forced him to stay with Brett Clark for the time being - not sure of all the details.

===========================================>

No news as yet of the Boxing day Trial at Ioco - but I did see a neat video clip of Krash Crumly feeding some crows in the parking lot.

============================================>

At least a couple of Vernon riders were out playing in the snow yesterday - Blake took this shot of Olivier in the trees on his Outlaw Beta Xtrainer. We used to do this a lot in Alberta many years ago on Boxing day - the best bike I had studded up for this type of riding, was a very trick Yamaha TT 500 thumper.

Tuesday December 26th 2017 - Boxing Day.

Tuesday, December 26th, 2017

We hope that everyone had a great Christmas day, with Family and friends, and that Santa was good to you all.

*****************************************************

Boxing day in Vancouver means a Fun Trial at Ioco, which this year has some snow  - while this activity has always been a tradition in the UK, where the weather is milder ( but not always) - it’s also a way of working off the Christmas Turkey - I know that after our family dinner last night,  we were all sitting back totally stuffed, like a group of beached whales. - Not sure what today will bring, but it’s definitely too cold for motorcycling.

Here is a shot of North Wales on a winters day - it’s an area where I rode Trials all those years ago.

Image may contain: sky, mountain, cloud, outdoor and nature

****************************************************

Checking out the the web pages, most were filled with pics of family gatherings from around the world, but I did come across this pic of old friends Jordi Tarres and Taddy Blazusiak  - not sure where it was taken. - Taddy of course rode World Trials a few years ago, before making the switch to Enduro.

Here is a an old video of Jordi, out for a fun ride with his pals back in the day - Gallach, Renales and Cordina.

MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE - HAVE A GREAT HOLIDAY - WE WILL BE BACK WITH MORE NEWS TOMORROW***********************************

Canada is the Rocky Mountains “”"”"”  What a great shot of the train going through the canyon

Image may contain: outdoor, nature and water

When we came to Canada in 1965, the vastness of the Country was almost overpowering - the trip over  started in the UK,-  took us on a Boeing 707 to Montreal, where we got our first taste of the new Country in a strange environment mixed with the French Language. -

Although we had traveled in Europe, it was now a different experience, having a young daughter only 18 months old. - Next it was on an Air Canada DC8 to Winnipeg, and Saskatoon followed by a last hop on a DC Viscount Turbo Prop to Calgary - Total time 13 hours Plus !!

I can remember looking out at the white landscape and wondering what the future would hold for us in Alberta. -
Of course it is now 2017, and a lot of water has gone under the bridge, I have been lucky enough ( Thanks to Yamaha) to travel from Coast to Coast, plus the Northern Territories. My love for the Lush and free ( so far) riding in the Mountains, has been an unforgettable experience.

Naturally at this point in my life, I’m getting a bit limited to what I can do, but I feel that I’ve been so fortunate to be able to help promote Trials riding in Western Canada. - Merry Christmas everyone.

Earlier this year at the Super Stars, I met a young guy from Iran - Koorosh Ghorbani,  who was riding a Honda Center ( Vancouver ) Montesa. - He appeared to be quite a good rider, although I must confess that I took a good sequence of him crashing in one section.  - It appears he is now back home and promoting Trials aboard a TRS.

Yesterday I had lunch with Josef, who was back in town after  a 6 week trip all over the globe, both in Europe and the Far East - It was nice to catch up on all the latest news.

============================================>

Although this is the season for giving, and enjoying time with the family, we should also spare a thought for those who are not so fortunate, and remember the friends, who didn’t make it through the year. - In our small Motorcycle World, we lost Kelvin Marshal, Eldon Edey and Ron Harvey.  - It’s a sad time for many.

A Christmas card from Wales, arrived today sent by my sister.. ( I can even pronounce a half arsed version of this) - It was always a challenge after a few pints though !!!
No automatic alt text available.

We also got a nice card emailed from Andreu Codina - Andreu was a top 15 World Trials rider in the 90’s - and worked as the Export Sales Manager for Gas Gas. - It was at this time that we met, and supplied toobelts and Cross Bar pads  to Gas Gas. - He later joined Sherco for a few years. - I think he still runs his Top Fun Accessory company in Spain.  He still gets out for an occasional ride with his buddies, and is pictured here in the yellow jacket.

Another nice Classic shot from the Scottish - the section is called Edramucky - but not used these days. The rider is Reg May who worked for the UK  Bultaco Importers, Comerfords - He was regarded as being the ultimate tuner of the Sherpa T Trials bikes, and prepared the winning bikes of Yrgo Vesterinen  and Martin Lampkin, and others.  Note : This pic did not transfer correctly so we  deleted it.

===========================================>

How about this for a change of pace - I for one never knew that Norton made a Speedway bike. This one from the 1930’s.

============================================>

We had a surprise visit from Chris Hrabb  yesterday afternoon - he was in Town to pick up his new Husky 300 that will get it’s first big test in January, when  he travels to Texas with Dave Chambers and a bunch of other BC riders, to tackle the “Rev Limiter” Enduro.  - Sounds like it should be a “Blast” - Chris said they now have too much snow in Revelstoke , so the TRS has been put away for the winter.
============================================>

Last Monday we emailed a rush “Fill in” order to Wulf in the UK - It arrived yesterday - Just in time for Christmas !!!  - We are open today, if anybody want’s to stop by and pick up last minute gifts. - ( Maybe a nice new Beta !!)

============================================>

Breaking News - Scotch Creek Pub burns down.

============================================>

Friday, December 22nd, 2017

So I’m guessing that not too many of our readers knew that Santa came from Wales -  Correct? - Plus he has a training session for the elves before the big day. !! - It would appear that “Santa” might be having some issues as he is not looking “Happy”.

With all the snow in BC - we are not sure if the annual Boxing Day Trial will take place at IOCO - but I think it more than likely, as they are a hardy bunch. Best check with somebody before heading out from the Interior

============================================>

Sammy phoned this morning - he was somewhere in Saskatchewan  heading for Manitoba with his lovely lass Daniele  to meet the Parents !!! -
Speaking of that - I should note that we will be unable to attend the Royal Wedding, because that is the same weekend as the Outlaw Trial at Scotch Creek - Sorry Harry - we will mail you a Canadian flag!

==========================================>

This vintage shot was posted on FB & I just had to share it  - Obviously another Scottish Six Days pic - but a reminder about what the sport of Trials is all about. - It’s not about joining the Circus. -  But don’t get me wrong - I really admire what the new Pro riders do on the bikes, but I say again ” Is this Trials” or is it another sport?

Should there be a different series in a sport that is already showing signs of decay? - Obviously, my comments are just my own opinion - What you might call - Just an old guy’s look at the sport.

But before you press the delete button, consider this - The Bradford Club in the the UK with a very long history in Trials, including the Lampkin Family - and many other famous names. - Have just announced that they might be shutting down the club. The reason not enough young people stepping up to the plate.  - They have enough people who attend events to observe, but nobody to help with the other really important job of sign in and results.

A few years ago, I used to do all of the above, until one angel showed up by the name of Julie Lucas ( wife of Martin) -   - What Julie has done over the the past few seasons along with the help of Judy Rathbone - to completely take over our WTC  Duties is to say the least - Outstanding - very Professional.  - The reason that we are able to continue on promoting Trials in Western Canada  is because of people like Julie -

The future looks bright with young guys like Sammy to promote the sport. - but at this Christmas time - I would like to say this  “The old Trials format” was the best - It was called Mud-plugging.

================================================>
Motorcycle clubs are great, as long as they are run correctly and are accountable,  plus have the people to not only put on events, but to do the work “Behind the scenes”  -
