Everybody knows that there is nothing like that first ride on a brand new bike - it never ceases to thrill, no matter how old you are. - Of course when we try bikes for the first time, we are  watching for  things that could be improved or are below par.  - Well I can tell you that the new 2022 TRS One 250 with the estart - is perfect. - not just for an old guy - but likely 40% of the riders.

Yes it is quite quick off the throttle, so I might fit a slow unit, but on this first ride of the year ( after a 4 month break)  - I could not find fault .  I was in 3rd-4th most of the time- - We went on a long ride on old trails which sometimes were still snowbound - but generally perfect for that first ride of the year. - I think a good indicator of how you like a bike, is when you ride longer that normal - you just don’t want to quit. -  Suffice to say that I was tired when I got home and enjoyed my soak in the tub.

We met this nice couple while out - we enjoyed a chat and they supplied  us with a granola bar - as I had forgotten mine - I should add that I also forgot to put a memory card in the Go Pro - so that great footage never happened.!! Damn. - Roy did well today, although I think I took him a lot farther than he would normally go.

The bottom line is that I would likely have found the new Beta Evo just as much fun, but those bikes have seen little change since 2009 - still brilliant, but the new TRS with estart - is certainly a game-changer.

The first round of the British Trials Championship took place yesterday at Hook Woods, with Team TRS and Team Beta taking all the top spots - Toby Martyn (TRS) was the top Champ - Sam Conner (Beta) Expert. - George Hemmingway (Beta) 125 class. - Special mention should go to Alfie Lampkin (Vertigo) who grabbed 3rd spot in the 125 class - Full results can be seen on the ACU site.  - All pics are courtesy of Heath Brindley.

I think today is “The First Day of Spring” - and this pic from back in 2013 that popped up, shows what a wonderful day in was back then, up on Bear Ridge - I’m afraid I can’t recall who I was riding with. - The Beta Evo’s look nice.

Today I will be going out to visit Roy on the Westside, for our first ride of the year, and I will take out the special 2022   TRS 250 that Mountain MC brought in for me - It’s set up as per UK, so nice and smooth - I will take some pics and file a report later.

Answer to the Friday quiz - Geoff Duke on the Gilera, in the Isle of Man TT - only Pete Varey and Harlow got this one - As mentioned previously, I got to shake Geoff’s hand at a Club dinner when I was 16 - I was introduced to him by one of the Oswestry Club Senior members, - a couple of years later - Geoff passed me in the Picton Time Trial as I was stopped taking a rest - ( I was knackered ) - this inspired me to carry on and our Team got 3rd place.  Geoff was a real gentleman and very well liked.

This is a pic of  Bill Brown - boss of Wulfsport UK - Bill still sponsors events and riders - here he is with a young Lady on a Maico which Bill Imported for many years. - Although we have never met - we started selling Wulf gear in 1995, and get fantastic service on all the quality stuff - Bill emailed me when he found out that I had been inducted into the Canadian Motorcycle Hall of Fame. - Sounds like a great guy.

And here is another great old guy - a good friend to me and a huge promoter of Motorcycle Sport - Walt also sponsored the first FIM World Trial that we put on in 1975 - plus literally dozens - maybe hundreds of riders can say that it was Walt who first got them started with bikes.  - I think this pic was on Stan’s TY when they were taking it apart to pack into suitcases for the trip to the 1984 Scottish, where Stan finished 13th.

These Friday’s seem to come around much quicker these days - must be an old age thing ! - Of course for the Motorcycle crowds - it’s time for planning the weekend ride. !!  - So is anybody heading to Ioco Sunday?

The March TRS Trial  will kick off the start of what we hope will be a much better season for Trials competition out West. - Mountain Motorcycle are sponsoring this one, so if you have any questions on TRS - stop by their tent for a chat ( They will tell you that Outlaw Trialsport in Vernon are the TRS dealers for Central BC and Alberta).

Came across this pic from one of our trips up Joss Mountain - we ran into a ton of snow that year - we are stopped here not far from the Summit and I’m chewing on a banana - which my new Doc says I’m not to eat anymore !! something to do with the conflict with the other meds she has me on!! - Bob Clark is into something else !! Check out those Wulf pants - 1995 vintage - before Wulf included special Trials gear in their line up.  - I’m in the XC gear which we also  sold at the time - very good quality. but a bit pricey.

The famous Scottish Six Days Trial is only a few weeks away and is limited to approx 300 riders - they always get over 500 applicants, so a ballot is held with only the lucky ones getting in. - “Overseas” riders are usually OK - maybe because the organizing club realize the importance of an International Entry list.

 
 



The rider list is out for the upcoming Scottish Six Days Trial - and we see two Canadians entered. - both with close numbers, so they should se a lot of each other during the week. -  Interesting club that Stan belongs to!!! Have to make sure I give him some decals for his helmet - plus of course he will be using one of the Outlaw toolbelts that we make which he designed for Trials. ( Stan always does a bit of free advertising for us)

TRS TRIAL THIS SUNDAY  - News from the CPTA

Ioco Trials Riders

Hi Everyone,

Please join us at Ioco this Sunday, March 20th for the TRS Moto Canada Trial.

The Advanced/Expert loop has been graciously set up by Jesse McDowall, and the Junior/Intermediate/Sportsman loop by Skip Parker.

Below are a few words from Skip:

It was great to see the amount of new riders and members at the Club Social this year.

The Junior/Intermediate/Sportsman sections for the TRS Trial this Sunday,March 20th have been set up with these riders in mind.

If you’ve never ridden a Trials competition before this is the perfect opportunity to see what it’s all about and enjoy the challenge and camaraderie that goes along with it.

There will be 3 loops of 10 sections.

The loop trail follows the “Small Wheel Trail” mostly and is a very easy ride.

The Junior sections are perfect for beginners with nothing too tricky but designed to get you used to riding between the ribbons.

The Intermediate Sections are definitely on the easy side with a few tricky bits thrown in to keep it interesting.

If you are a bit more skilled than a beginner but want to avoid the tricky bits of Intermediate, I suggest riding the Sportsman class which allows you to ride any combination of Junior and Intermediate lines within a section.

If you would like to check out the sections beforehand on Saturday, feel free to follow the Purple loop ribbons and walk the sections. The loop starts across the road from the Clubhouse then to the left. Remember that it is against Club rules to ride any sections before an event even if you are not participating.

There’s only a slight chance of rain this Sunday (so far) but even if it’s raining it promises to be a great day. Hope to see you all there!

We bought the  GM Van in the background, new in 1993 - we traveled all over Western Canada promoting our business plus also made a trip to the 1994 USA World Round at Donner.

When the odometer clicked over to 1 million 200 thousand Km - we decided it was time to put the old gal out to pasture, and this is where it has sat ever since - dirty and rusted - but what stories she could tell.

Oh yes! That’s a brand new 2022 TRS 250 in front !!

Looks like Emma Bristow won a coffee pot !!!  The pretty  lady is a seven time World Ladies Trials Champ.- UPDATE .

TrialGP Women ace Emma Bristow has recently become the first ever trials rider and female winner of the Torrens Trophy - a prestigious award handed out by the UK’s Royal Automobile Club.

Recipients of the trophy are recognised for a variety of reasons, with Emma’s seven consecutive FIM Trial World Championship titles undoubtedly an incredible achievement and an inspiring story for all female riders in the UK.

Congratulations, Emma!

Well to quote that famous saying “The Eagle has Landed” - not exactly something from outer space - but at least we got our first TRS shipment of bikes yesterday . - Yes there were delays - but with everything happening in the World, perhaps the delivery of a few Trials bikes is pretty low on the scale right now.

With everything that is going on in the Ukraine - it’s hard to concentrate on what is happening in our everyday life -  although Russia seems like a long way from us - in reality it’s only 53 miles from Alaska, so you can expect the USA to start ramping up defense programs in that neck of the woods pretty quick. -  Of course many will remember why the Alaska Hiway  through BC was built during the second World War.

Because of the above - we try to avoid a lot of the news channels - and spend time clicking onto Netflixs and U.Tube - some great video of both old and new Trials stuff on the tube.

Pete Vary had the first correct answer  to the Sunday quiz - The Mountain is Ben Nevis in Scotland, and known primarily to Trials riders, for the last day sections in the Scottish Six Day Trial. - Quite a number of events, have been won and lost on “The Ben” - including a big five by Martin Lampkin back in the day, and in more recent times, when James Dabill was very unlucky to have the rear tire come off the bead on the final section of the week. both Lampkin and Dabill were leading at the time so a real heartbreak for them.

John Kitchener also correctly guessed the “Ben” - as he should having ridden the Scottish a number of times - John  is still stuck in the UK, but I keep him updated on the weather scene for his hometown of Nelson BC.

Nobody came up with the names of the “Scramblers” in the other quiz pic - maybe they didn’t realize it was a quiz?  ( Until a late email by Harlow.)
The five riders that I recognized  were - Chris Horsefield CZ leading - Dave Bickers CZ- Brian Wade Greeves - Arthur Browning Greeves, Brian Goss Greeves.  -( Harlow Rankin had 4 of these -while John Kitchener emailed to say he saw a lot of these guys on the TV Grandstand Series.)

Only the old timers will remember this rider and the motorcycle - We saw Provini in the Isle Of Man in 1957 - he had a terrific battle with Carlo Ubialli on the MV and Luigi Taveri  also on MV - Sammy Miller passed them all in one corner near where we were watching, only to have his bike seize on the very last bend before the finishing straight - he pushed in.  - I think Ubialli won that day. ( I can’t remember if Sammy was on a Mondial or NSU)

We often post pics of the Classic bikes being used now in Europe - some definitely  not as they came out of the factory - check out this James - the only thing that is original on this bike, is the Motif on the Gas Tank - I had a few James bikes when I was young, and while good at the time - they were nothing when compared to the “New” Classic models.

Of course it was Mick Andrews that started the buying frenzy for these new James models - basically all new from the ground up.

Here is a pic of me with Mick’s  Scottish Pre-65 winning James in Fort William.  - He said I could take it for a ride but I declined.

All action in the front yard on Thursday - This VERY large tree had to come  down as it was interfering with the phone lines plus was getting scary in big wind storms. - Interesting that the guy doing all the cropping was an Aussie.

Want to check out how a small factory like TRS operates? - click onto Utube and get a personal tour with Jordi - of course it will help if you speak Spanish !! - My first tour of the Yamaha factory in Japan was in 1976 - all very hi-tech even back then, but some stuff like the oil pumps, were all tested by  hand  - at that time 30% of the staff were women ( because a top Japanese guy told me they are more reliable!! Yes you read it here first) - We also got to see the car engine plant, where Yamaha were building engines for Toyota - Japanese staff yelling “NO PICTURES !! - all very top secret.
