Quiz  today - Who is this TRS rider? pictured with his Grandson.
No description available.

Answer to the Tuesday Quiz - We really are not sure how old Stan is -( One answer pegged him at 53?) - but you can see the great result he had in Scotland in 1984 - thanks to John Kitchener for sending this - Stan was riding the Walt Healy sponsored Yamaha TY 250. ( Check  out some of the big names that finished behind him)

This coming weekend is the Outlaw/Team Squid Trial at Ioco - check the CPTA website for details. -   There is also one in Wales on the same date. - We really appreciate the CPTA and especially Steve Day for putting on this Trial - at this point with all the turmoil of Covid etc - If anybody is planning on driving down to Vancouver, on the Sunday (early)  please let me know.
We have heard from Ross, that the Annual Outlaw Trial ( first started in 1986) will he held at his property on the May long weekend. - More details to follow.

Pic shows Welsh guy,  Iwan Roberts !!! - Did you know that he is also a very good  car Rally Driver?

Believe it or not the pic below was taken 11 years ago on Easter Monday, of the quail in our front yard. Yes snow!!!  not too bad this year -  was cool with rain and the snow stayed up on the high ridges and Mountain Passes.

Neil Carter sent us the pic below of Stan back in (I think) 1983 watching Mart Lampkin checking in his bike for the Scottish -
No description available.

The work on setting up the Scottish or any other big Trial starts about a year in advance - at least in the planning department - I know it did for me when I set up the 1975 World Round in Alberta. - the pic shows a few of the flags that are placed across the moors to keep riders on track - a huge job all done on a volunteer basis.

John Kitchener asked what I thought about the scoring system these days for the Six Days in Scotland - especially regarding a “Stop” - As many will know this event has for the most part been a “Non-stop” Trial - with the Observers very strict. - They did go to the “stop allowed ” system for a couple of years - but  with dwindling entries - reverted back to the old way, and things immediately rebounded with the entry list oversubscribed, every year.
We don’t know just how strict the observers are these days in Scotland, but with a lot of riders now doing hop & bop techniques it must make life pretty tough for them - ( usually trying to keep their score cards dry from the rain)

The answer to the Monday quiz  was Olga Kevelos  - which John emailed from the UK around 4am our time!!

Quiz for today - How old is Stan Bakgaard? and what year did he set a Canadian finishing record at the Scottish? -  on what bike?
=========================================>

Somebody asked me the other day what I thought was wrong with the Trials scene these days ?  - My reply - “Well spending over ten grand on a new bike - then throwing it at a 10 foot rock wall - might be a start”

The point being ( to start up the old  record again ) Most people who buy a Trials bike want to enjoy a nice fun day out in the woods. - While there has been a recent trend for the “Go fast” guys to pick up a Trials bike - they are usually only interested in learning how to ride like Graeme Jarvis, and will never actually enter a Trials competition.

As for organizers ! Well these seem to have become quite a rare breed, lots of reasons of course - but the main one is that it’s a lot of work and no pay. Hats off to all those that still have the passion to do this. ( Afraid  I’m too old to hike around marking out sections these days)
===========================================>

News from the Big Kahuna - the top class was won by Tyler ? Metaglia? (spelling) with second going to Trystan Hart -  Local Vernon rider, Andrew Christiansen smoked everybody in the Legends class, and Steve Foord took things  sensible and rode to finish. - with over 450 riders, this had to be some event-  so kudus to the team that put it on. - I noticed that the main sponsor appears to have been Outlaw BUT NOT US - the new Yamaha dealer uses that name also, which does get a bit confusing sometimes - the same as Mountain Motorsports in Golden being confused with long time Trials Importers  Mountain Motorcycle of Coquitlam.

Emily rode great and finished 2nd in her class on the Beta.

Team “Hemmo” have won both classes at the European Championship this past weekend - Congrats to them seen here with their parents. - Both lads ride Beta’s supplied by John Lampkin.
No description available.

Who is this lady rider?
No description available.

Answer to yesterday - Sammy Miller seen passing a struggling rider in the 1966 Scott Trial. - A few got this - but only John Kitchener noted the full name - Samuel Hamilton Miller. The year was 1966.
==============================================>

Yesterday we had a nice visit with  Lee and Marianne from Nelson - they were picking up a  new Beta Evo 200 for their daughter Nina - Way to go Nina - you will have a blast on that.

Noticed quite a few Trials riders entered at the Big Kuhana race in Kamloops - including Sean Bird and Alex Walton - the McNeals and Dean Wandler  & Ted McDowal - they had a huge entry including a large Ladies class that included Emily Roberts .

Not sure of the results, but think Tryston Hart got second - will post more later when we see more posts.

Any Trials rider who has ridden in the Scottish Six Day Trial, or perhaps somebody who rode in the 1975 World Trial we put on in Alberta, can relate to this image. - Canadian Muskeg and the stuff on Rannoch Moor in Scotland seem to be very similar - and unforgiving.

Well the weather was sunny to start yesterday , but got cold by the time we we riding on the Westside - not that it bothered us - Doug and myself did a bit of a “Blitz” over on the firebreak - quite a few puddles & muddy, but what a blast on the Xtracks - this is the first time that I have been out with Doug for a couple of years and while he still zips along really good ( he loves that TRS) - I tend to be a bit more cautious - but did manage to keep up - and more importantly ! did not fall down.
.
Pic shows Roy & Doug before setting out - Doug in his brand new Wulf Trials pants !!
No description available.
Doug tried out my 250 with the slow throttle and now has one on his 300. ( This is actually a quite steep climb - but looks flat on the pic)
No description available.
This is steeper than it looks.

Later in the afternoon we had a visit with David Speakman from the UK  via Calgary - he was on his way to ride the Big Kahuna in Kamloops & we had a great chat about how the sport is in Canada compared to the UK. He will be hooking up with Foordy today who is also racing after his horrible accident a couple of years ago. - Looks like the weather will be good.

Birthday greetings  to Jimmy Corkle - who is 74 today

Good Friday April 15th 2022

Friday, April 15th, 2022

This weekend will no doubt see a lot of people, out on their bikes- maybe even camping for that first Spring weekend with pretty nice weather forecast for the OK Valley. - ( Not so if you live in Sask/Manitoba)

Today I will be heading out for a ride with old friend Doug Nimmo, who has a Summer home on the Westside - Doug also has a new Xtrack, so we will take some pics.

=========================================>

Answer to the Thursday quiz was Johnny Brittain - a quite famous Royal Enfield factory rider from back in the day, sadly no longer with us. - First with the correct answer was Harlow Rankin.

Most will recognize Dougie Lampkin with the Beta named after him - and also his Dad - but not many are likely to name the guy on the far left in the pic.

No description available.

=========================================>

Not sure who took this great shot of young Harry Hemingway at the Euro Trial last weekend. Looking good on the Beta.
No description available.

Not to be outdone - Younger brother George Hemingway  (below) took the win in the other Euro class.

The East German MZ was a real Rocket - but also if I recall correctly - had a tendency to seize - I think Bill Ivy got killed on one, when this happened during a test ride.

No description available.

(pic by Grabowski)

A beauty of an MZ two stroke race machine.

Some say two strokes are oily. Ever seen a four stroke blow up on the track? - it’s a total emergency and takes an eternity to mop up the oil, and if it’s wet, - forget it! A two stroke can leave a four stroke of the same capacity trailing. But we will excuse and make allowances for the four strokes despite their complicated costly and heavy designs. But the only way they could beat a two stroke was to ban two strokes! - and they did that because they were rocking Honda’s boat!
Thanks Will Dunlop!
==========================================>
With a lot of talk these days about the future of both Trials and motorcycle sport, some thinking it will go “Electric” - but in my opinion one of the biggest issues that we will have in the next few years, is Freight costs and supply. - Of course the true enthusiast, will always “find a way” - and for us old timers, it will be interesting to see how it all pans out. But for me, my interest will always be in the gas powered bikes - except that is for the kids starting out - when the small electric models are great “starter” bikes. - However prices on these are being pushed a bit out of reach by freight costs - we just got hit with a $500 freight bill for a small Beta, which we specially ordered - and we sell these at just over our cost, in order to get kids into the sport.
===========================================>
A reminder that this is Easter weekend, and yes we will be available -BUT PLEASE PHONE TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT - our land line is (250) 545-6139. - we do have a number of people coming from out of town to pick up bikes & parts - etc.   - Note : We will be closed tomorrow Good Friday.
===========================================>
This weekend is the Big Kahuna Cross Country race in Kamloops - always a big turn out for this and a report from Andrew Christiansen, is hinting at a possible 300 riders.
Steve Foord will be at this race - his first event since his very serious Motor vehicle accident  a couple of years ago - we wish him lots of luck.

============================================>
The correct answer to the Wednesday quiz - was Shane Bridden from Kelowna  - I took this pic of him at Bear Creek when he was just getting into trials - hence the Enduro style Helmet & gear. - Nobody got this!!
.
Today we turn the clock back to a former great Trials rider - but who is it.??
No description available.
======================================================>
Alfie being minded by Dougie  - shades of when Mart minded for Dougie - must bring back lots of memories.

Fabulous day in Wales riding close to where I won the 1984 British World round in Merthyr.( Taff’s home town)

This UK trip was last minute and based on weather, as I’m not a big fan of wet and muddy riding and haven’t washed a bike in years! Also, I didn’t want to take any risk of getting my new 2022 HEBO gear dirty for our photo shoot session today regarding my new website launch in a few months.
In about 60 days, I’ll be coaching and competing at the Whiskey Gulch Trial in Montana, USA on the new TRS RR 300 electric start model thanks to TRS Spain, TRS USA and MossyRock Trials. With that in mind, I took the opportunity to train on a similar product before heading across the Atlantic in June.
Without a doubt, the TRS is extremely impressive and thank you to Heath for the opportunity to experience his machine, that of the 2021 British Champion and TrialGP2 World Champion Toby Martyn.
A big thank you to HEBO Spain for providing the new gear and I’m very much looking forward to our collaboration. And thanks to Jim Snell TRS USA/Dan Larson from Mossy Rock Trials! “

Yesterday we had a call from Oasis Insurance in North Battleford Sask - to confirm our Off Road Liability Insurance  for this year ( Don’t forget this is a requirement when riding on Crown Land in BC)
As we head into the Easter long weekend - you can expect to see the CO’s out at the usual popular riding areas, checking  for registration and Insurance - Also be aware that there will likely be a ton of ATV’s out as well, so keep a good eye ( and ears)  for these - every year we hear about head on crashes .

Yesterday we had a visit from old  Buddy Luke Towers , who we haven’t seen for ages, he was with our regular Mechanic Ken who was picking up parts, so Luke had a chance to brows the “Fleet:” and  catch up on our Trials world.  Who knows maybe he will get back into it, like Banjo Bobby.

Monday, April 11th, 2022

We did think of making this a quiz shot - but it’s unlikely anybody without the Book of the Scottish would be able to guess it.  One point mentioned by Roy, who reads up on a lot of the old bikes - is that Rudge had a hand operated lever that lowered the side-stand when coming to a stop. !! No this wasn’t a big hit.

They still use Town Hall Brae in the Scottish, but now the famous section has been made more difficult for the modern bikes, with the addition of a number of well placed rocks. ( It takes a few points by tired riders at the end of the day)
Answer to the Sunday quiz - Don Smith on Edramucky - a rare pic not showing him without a cigarette in his mouth - we did get a few correct responses. - Bob Clark was first.
