The last day of the month and we are hoping cooler weather will start us into August. - Although we have had these very hot weeks in previous years, it seems to be worse for us with advancing years, - I have always said that September is my favorite month ( except that this also brings another birthday!!)

This would seem to apply to me as well as other old farts.

No description available.

Definitely  one of the best times for riding in the woods, but of course if you are planning on any Mountain rides, be prepared for snow !! - We have experienced this quite a few times and I was always glad to be on a Beta, which had lots of torque and could pull 4th gear. ( I think I surprised Stan one time when he asked the question)
Here are a couple of shots from 2007 up on Joss in August !! - top is of Taff - below is myself. having a banana break - not sure what Bob Clark is having. -

I remember chatting to our guide Mark Thompson in 2003 during our first time up the Mountain, when he told me that there was a very narrow window, when it was possible to reach the Summit, because of the snow. — We got lucky with the weather some years but not always..   -      ( Also remember that I was 66 years old that first time I went up Joss - and It was likely the toughest as we had to go up around some avalanches and it was so overgrown on  some of the trails it was a case of putting your head down and bashing your way through - we also had to traverse some pretty deep snow drifts that year)

Below is a pic of Mark and myself at the Lookout in 2008 - You will notice that my right hand is taped up with electrical tape as I caught a branch on the narrow pack horse trail. — However I still managed to hold my cold beer which I had packed along. -  The message here is Always be prepared, if you go riding in the Mountains, and NEVER go alone.

On top of the World - what a great feeling. ( And a good commercial for Coors Lite!!)
No description available.

Note : Looking back at these photographs I find it hard to believe that I was able to do this in my declining years.. - As perhaps I have mentioned before , the Forestry people put a new roof on the Lookout in 2007 and also installed windows - plus a visitors book -  all of this I think because of the huge Mountain bike influx into the area ( not good IMHO)  -

Anyway - the Mountain is now closed to “Motorized Vehicles” - ( At least I know I have got my name in the Visitors book as the oldest Trials rider to make  that climb up to the clouds) - ( My last trip up the Mountain was on my 75th birthday with Stan Bakgaard and yes it was likely the most difficult for me out of all the trips.) - Thanks Stan for making me do this and for the help along the way.
It should be noted that this lookout trail was built using pack horses   in 1920 -  but the actual Lookout was never used because they found a better one ( Sounds like a government decision similar to what happens these days)

This old pic cropped up from when Sammy first came over from OZ and I took him to Silver Creek for some practice as it was bloody hot!!  we found this neat waterfall to cool off.

Saturday we watched the last day of the Red Bull Romaniacs on You Tube - this showed a lot of the difficult terrain that the riders had to tackle on the final day - As mentioned Graham Jarvis took the win and our own Cannuck Trystan Hart finished 4th - the weather was hot and dusty  so not easy. ( likely impossible for many)

May be an image of 6 people, dirt bike, motorcycle, tree and outdoors

Another club having problems - not Trials, but with the same sort of issues.
——————————————————————–>
The PGMA has been around for several years, and as many of you know, there have been some amazing people who throughout the years have gone above and beyond to bring racing to Prince George. What some of you might not know is the depth of work that goes into the day-to-day as well as putting on these events that we all look forward to.
I have been an executive of the board going on 5 years now, and it saddens me to see our volunteers dwindle a little more with each passing year. Our board and volunteers, past and present are burned out, and where there is burn out there is a lack of willingness to continue pushing forward to give everyone quality events.
We have worked incredibly hard to grow motocross in the North, but what we have found is that while people want to see things happen, they don’t want to be part of making them happen which is extremely trying on our club.
Many of us have gotten to the point where we love the sport but also hate it because we are downright burned out. Fortunately, we keep pushing forward because at the end of the day, nothing beats bringing our motocross community together and seeing all your smiling faces.
To that note, we are extremely blessed with amazing tracks across BC and beyond but running a non-profit organization is proving difficult. A handful of people can neither sustain the organization nor can they put on multiple events. If you would like to see motocross continue to grow in our city, and if you would like to continue being a host city for events then we need your help.
Without volunteers, our club will not survive, and we will not be able to bring anymore events to the Blackwater MX Park.
If you would like to get involved please join us at our next meeting

Friday ( Another scorcher) I clicked onto the Peter Star Podcast featuring Kenny Roberts - a really really good interview, Kenny always did “Say it like it is” - check it out, you will enjoy.
============================================>
Graeme Jarvis has won the Red Bull Romaniacs for the 7th time, the brilliant, very modest British ex Trials rider on a “Private” Husky - says he was just “Hanging on” for the last day. - Trystan Hart also did fantastic with a 4th place finish - just off the podium - you can see all the results by clicking onto Enduro 21. ( also lots of video on You-Tube)

Another “Cooker” and a few fires in the area, hope they jump on these quickly.

One of the last Street bikes that I rode was a RZ 500 V4 like this one - I sometimes used it to commute from my home in Vernon to Kelowna Yamaha, back in 1985 when I was involved with that operation. - Yes it was very quick and I wore leathers. ( My best time was 23 minutes from my place up above the Vernon Airport, until parking it in the Kelowna Showroom - that was before they built the road over the top by Winfield) and no I never got a speeding ticket!!

Have you been following the Romaniacs  ??? - Here is one steep downhill they had to cope with - Trystan still doing well and I think in 4th overall at the moment.

Likely the easiest bike to explore the difficult Alpine is a Trials bike - here are some shots that Max Lang sent me from a camping trip  he and Britta just  did with their TRS bikes. - The soft 2 ply rubber tires don’t tear up the fragile terrain.

As most of our readers know, we supply parts and accessories Canada-wide and today we will mail out a Beta  Evo part to Newfoundland !! Seems the customer could not get it anywhere else. ( Support your local TRIALS dealer)

We did not get the Thunderstorm that was forecast - although it did cloud over a bit late yesterday -  forecast is for continued high temperatures over the long weekend, so enjoy yourself, but take care.

Red Bull Romaniacs news - Graeme Jarvis wins the first day - but Trystan Hart finished a fantastic 3rd on the day..  More than one top rider already out either with bike or body issues,

Manuel Lettenbichler  fried the clutch on his KTM while crazy guy Pol Tarres crashed the big Yamaha Tenere and broke his collar bone or shoulder. - ( But what a showman he is)
No description available.

I watched a clip of Trystan which showed how smooth and sensible he attacks some of the super difficult terrain. He races “Smart”.

Looking for a way to carry a spare gas bottle for those long summer Mountain rides? - This is our latest version which is a bit different - call us for details

No description available.

Of course some people like Lisa Rae are grouping up with others to explore the high Country - not sure where this pic is taken, but another clip shows them taking a dip in a lake with ice still on it. !! No question, that in this summer heat, the best places to be are either on the beach & in the water or up high in the Alpine. - However if you are an old codger like me, you are resigned to the air conditioned indoors . - But even that is sometimes in jeopardy like last night, when the power went off for an hour and a half.  - ( This madness of going all electric for everything will be the end for a lot of people in my opinion - but might also sell a lot of generators)

We are certainly getting to see more young ladies getting into Motorcycling - this is a great shot of Elizabeth Solera at a recent Trial in Europe on her TRS.

Wednesday, July 27th, 2022

We have seen very little  Trials action  from  most  areas for the past couple of years - the Covid thing was  on everybody’s mind, and perhaps some riders just decided to sell their bikes and do something else? -
————————————————————————->
However, one new guy who is interested in  promoting the sport is Walter Cukavac our former Cross Country Champ when I was running the Yamaha Team - Walter has some property out at Spruce Grove Alberta,  and I’m sure would be pleased to hear from anybody in the area who would like to spend time practicing.  ( You can contact me for more info)

—————————————————————–
As an old guy -  obviously I want to see the sport that I love and have been a part of since I was 16 years old continue - but who will step up to the plate? - Thanks to Ross and the Shuswap group for taking on things when I could not do it anymore. Also Florian, Chris and others.

Unfortunately , we hear the same story from other areas - Michael Traves is doing his best to light the fire under the MIC & CMA to promote more Trials Activity - it certainly sounds like they have the funding for a Canadian TDN Team which is Fantastic.

—————————————————————–
Not that things can’t change - when we moved to the OK Valley in 1981 there were NO trials events - a few years later and we were hosting National Championships. - It just takes enthusiasm for the sport.

Good to see things “Hopping along” in the UK - here is some info on the event coming up this weekend

Wulfsport ACU Trial GB heads to Rock & Hop.
The title chase reaches a critical point this weekend, especially in the main Trial GB class with just two points separating Jack Peace (Sherco) and Toby Martyn (TRRS).
New to the Championship, Rock & Hop, near Harrogate is the venue for the penultimate round which will take place over the standard three lap, twelve section course. Members of the Ripon Club have been working hard setting out the course over the three parcels of land, locally known as Rock & Hop A, B and C.
However, the Trial is not just about the two riders battling for the GB title. Jack’s brother Dan, Billy Green and Jack Dance will compete over a course which ex British Champion James Dabill has advised the club on.

==========================================>
As the current champions in both the World Trophy and Junior World Trophy classes, all eyes will be on Italy when they arrive at Le Puy-en-Velay, France from Monday 29 August to Saturday 3 September for this year’s FIM International Six Days of Enduro (ISDE). Winners at their home event last year the Italian Motorcycle Federation (FMI) has confirmed a formidable line up in both classes to defend their titles at the 96th edition of this historic event.The challenge they face this time around will be slightly different from twelve months ago, as all riders will now count towards the overall result in the World Trophy class, thus making the reliability of the bikes and riders even more important. Plus, no longer do the nations have to field riders in E1, E2 and E3, with Italy choosing two E1 riders and one E2 rider in their elite team.

Tuesday was another day to click on You Tube - this time I watched some great video of Bill Lomas on the Moto Guzzi V8 - I was lucky enough to see him and Ken Kavenagh  race these in the 1957 TT over in the Isle of Man -Bill also attended our Oswestry Club Awards night one year. - Fantastic sound and interesting to later hear Sammy Miller comment on the bike which he has in his Museum and also to see him ride it.

Sammy might be hard for some people to understand, but he is a wealth of information on anything  to do with motorcycling, both on and off road.
The other really interesting and funny clip I watched, was the Mick Grant interview, with his old racing buddy Steve Parrish - that is hilarious - check these out, you won’t be disappointed. ( Mick took up Classic Trials after he stopped racing and still competes on a regular basis.) -Check these videos out - it’s brilliant to be able to see them due to modern technology.

We will be keeping an eye on what is happening at the Red Bull Romaniacs   - but with the continued very hot weather , we will not be venturing far from home.

So what do you do when it’s too darned hot to go out ? ( Glad of course that I don’t have a daily job anymore) - In case you didn’t know I’ve been in the “Hobby” business for quite a few years.
.Well !! - you can do like I did on Monday, turn on the air conditioner , and click onto You Tube and check out all the neat videos - the one I really enjoyed was the 2019 Interview with former World Champion Road racer Phil Read. -

I was lucky to be marshaling at Oulton Park -  back in 1956 -  when Phil won the Clubman’s TT race there, ahead of Fred Neville ( later killed in the Manx Grand Prix that same year) I think Phil would have been 82 when this program was filmed in the UK  so that would make him 85 now - but what a story teller. - check it out.

The Clubmans TT was moved from the Isle of Man , mainly I think because too many “Clubmen” were getting killed ( A lad  that I knew from our Oswestry club being one)
Make sure you have the volume turned up to listen to the various sound clips - from the screaming two strokes to the wonderful 4 cylinder MV Augusta. - - Long before modern technology - we would buy 33 rpm records of the TT races, with commentary by Murray Walker - I likely still have a couple of these hidden away in the vaults.
====================================>

I do remember going out in the Summer heat riding with Barry - we would be out very early, then knocking on the door of Luigie’s Pub in Kelowna  around 10am!!!  - As an old guy I have learned my lesson after last Thursday and will not venture out again until it cools down.

==============================================>

Stan was out last weekend with  buddy Steve Day, who is getting a hankering for a big bike - Stan had him on his old Beta while he enjoyed the latest & greatest. - Looks like they got up pretty high in the Canyon.

This week is the Red Bull  Romaniacs - thanks to Enduro 21 for this blurb !!  We will of course be rooting for Trystan Hart , but Stan emailed to say that Trent Burgiss is also racing - Trent is a pretty tough guy and has ridden the  Baja 1000 -  BY HIMSELF!!! - He also came out with me a few years ago to learn about Trials. - Definitely  no slouch.

2022 Red Bull Romaniacs Fast Facts:

  • Riders from 51 nations enter the 19th edition of Romaniacs this week which is back to its traditional format of one day qualification followed by four, long days of navigation in the mountains.
  • The event will again feature a bivouac day for the different classes (Gold, Silver, Bronze, Iron and Atom), which means a night camping out on under the stars – family and/or support crews area allowed this year though, so riders aren’t totally isolated.
  • A new championship points leader is guaranteed on Saturday since Billy Bolt has undergone surgery on his wrist and will sit out the remaining HEWC rounds of the season.
  • Former winner Wade Young also announced he’s out of Romaniacs similarly needing to fix a long-standing injury – the Sherco rider’s back has been hampering his results this year.
  • Manuel Lettenbichler surely must start as favourite having won the previous three HEWC rounds this season (after missing round one) and with victory at the previous three editions of Romaniacs.
  • But there are some very hungry riders looking to take revenge on results which haven’t been entirely to their liking this season so far: Mario Roman (who also needs to take his first win in Romania) and Graham Jarvis who will want both redemption on his Erzberg disqualification and for his knee injury sustained while leading this event in 2021. Alfredo Gomez too has a very strong record at Romaniacs and is getting his self-run GASGAS team bike dialled now.
  • Outside bet? What about Trystan Hart? His fans will argue he is way more than an outside bet but the US Hard Enduro runaway champ bagged P3 at Erzberg and is hungry for more in this, his second visit to Romania.
  • Taddy is back! Taddy Blazusiak made a fleeting return to action in the Erzberg prologue but returns for real this week for his first HEWC race since breaking his wrist at the final SuperEnduro round in March.
  • Pol Tarres will again attempt the course on a Yamaha Tenere 700, not the main course as at Erzberg but the third rung of the adjusted Romaniacs routing in Bronze class. He will be joined by former Dakar winner Matthias Walkner on his KTM 450 Rally bike.

This week - we spent some time with Katie McG over on the Westside, with the intention of teaching her some basics, for Trials success. - We have mentioned before the importance of learning the “Double-blip” technique, here Katie is practicing on a small rock - Always practice on small obstacles, before trying something big, which often ends in disaster.

We have also mentioned the video’s and Trials schools that are put on by Ryon Young (7 time USA Champ) - Ryon is in my opinion, the best Trials instructor out there, for the average rider, so if you can, - try to take in his video selection for both beginners and advanced, - We have them on the old DVD & VHS - but they are likely obtainable on You Tube these days.

Above all “PRACTICE”  but only practice one technique at a time until you get it right.
No description available.

Unfortunately our practice session had to be cut short, due to the extreme temperatures, which had the old guy in trouble.

Here we are taking a break up on Two Chairs Ridge - the kind folk who own this area, have put up new chairs as a memorial to their son,- as the old ones were falling apart.

This beautiful spot overlooking the lake, is perfect for the memorial - a place to sit quietly and relax with your thoughts.

Friday, July 22nd, 2022

Well yesterday turned out to be an interesting day - I loaded my Beta Evo 300 into the van, and headed over to the Westside for a visit with Roy. - Of course we knew that the temperature was going through the roof, but I was quite unprepared for how it effected me - I guess a combination of old age, and some medical issues had me struggling, with many stops to rest under the trees - However, in spite of that, we did have a good day, below is a couple of pics .   ( We will definitely not be going out again until it cools down)

No description available.

Katie practicing an uphill section. we did manage to get some basic training in which Katie did well.

As we have said for a long time - the one technique  that all Off road riders need to master is The Double Blip”

We saw this pic of Alexz Wigg instructing in the UK - brought back memories of Barry Van As, when we did quite a lot of this  - Barry would yell  “Arm up- Leg out” as new riders practiced making turns. -

========================================>

A reminder that if you do go out during this very hot, dry  spell - please be careful as the threat of Forest fires is very high at the moment. - Also if you are on crown land - spark arresters are  required. ( We can supply for some models)

Here is a shot sent to us by Chris Hrabb who has been up in the Yukon fighting the fires - glad to see that they now have some rain and cooler temperatures up North.
