Quiz - Name the rider - The bike and the year.

===========================================>

I did think of posting this pic as a quiz - but nobody would have got it - a wonderful shot of the great Arthur Browning riding the Scottish on a very special Jawa .  Big Arthur is likely remembered as one of the best British “All Rounders” he rode everything - Trials,-.MX, - , Speedway, Hill climbs - you name it and Arthur has likely tried it - WE saw him at the 1983 ISDE in Wales, he rode a Yamaha TT 600 for the British Trophy Team - only the Germans, and Canada had a TT 600 on their Trophy Team - Pat Horan was on ours, which we borrowed from Walt Healy!!!

I was out busy up and down the Valley yesterday  on deliveries so missed the phone call from Jacek to tell us the sad news that Jimmy Corkle had passed away some time ago - Jacek had called to visit and found the shop all shuttered up, so he went next door to where Jimmy’s brother lives and received the bad news. - ( We thank Jacek for phoning us on this, as I have been trying to reach Jimmy on his cell phone for some time - in fact the most recent was just the day before.)

Jimmy Corkle was a not only a good friend - he was an excellent mechanic and helped us back in 2005 when we had the first Sherco 320 4T - I would drive the six hours to Jimmy’s and spend a couple of long days & nights trying to solve the starting problem. - We never cured it completely, because it was a design error - but we did come up with a six page diagnosis - which was sent to Andreu Cordina at the Sherco factory - glad to say we got a nice reply and some of these issues were installed in the later 2008 model.  -( they didn’t make it in 06 & 07) - we also drank a lot of Coors lite - Jimmy’s favorite.
I first met Jimmy when he worked as a mechanic at the Honda shop in Fernie  - I called on them to sell Opti Oil - we got chatting about Trials and although Jimmy looked nothing like a Trials rider ( He was a Harley rider) - He got really interested and together with his buddy Fergie - came to our first Outlaw Trial in Summerland back in 1987.

Jimmy and his buddy had twin shock TY 250’s but the thing I remember most was at the start of the Trial I noticed they both had these long coiled wires stretched from the  bike to the front of their shirt. - Jimmy explained that they had been practicing “Walls” and because of all the crashes - decided to utilize this kill switch system which was common on snowmobiles - Well OK I said - but we soon found out that this idea while it was way ahead of it’s time - was flawed in one aspect  -as soon as the rider moved back on the bike because of a rock ledge- log etc - the wire would pull off the tether and a big FIVE  would be scored.

Naturally it was a case of back to the drawing board - but you get the idea that Jimmy Corkle was a real thinker. - he sure helped me solve some mechanical problems over the years.

The times we spent together and the adventures are too many to record on this short blog - suffice to say Jimmy really was a brilliant guy and a wonderful friend.  - I will miss him dearly  -  I may just have to spend one more night around the campfire to tell some of the stories.

Quiz - Who is this rider on a rather unusual Matchless

May be a black-and-white image of 1 person, racing a vehicle, motorcycle and text

Answer to the Wednesday quiz - Andreu Codina on the Prototype   Montesa - only Bob  Clark and Stan Bakgaard got this - Codina like a lot of the other Spanish stars - Jordi Tarres etc started in bicycle Trials before moving on to the Motorized events.

Stan mentioned that he rode that bike when in Europe competing in the World Trials, he said he found it much lighter and revvy compared to his old 349 and later had one supplied by the US Importer. However the bike was plagued with issues  and Stan was soon on the Walt Healy  Yamaha TY 250 - which took the Trials world by storm in 1984.

Less than two weeks until the National Trial at Notre Dame of Portage…… ATAQ season is over so here’s a great opportunity to weigh in with Ontario’s riders, they will be in big numbers so come compete Sept 30th and Oct 1st!!! If you want to be National you need to get the CMA License otherwise you can just do the events without a license but you won’t be CMA without more!
So I’ve been working hard making zones for 2 days come see if my job is good!!!

As we head into another late week in September  - I can’t help remembering that classic  song about the Autumn leaves - although this is only likely recalled by the older generation  - It’s all about “The Autumn weather - turns the leafs to shame -  but I haven’t got time for the waiting game”    For many people this is the best time of the year to be out in the woods, with the brilliant colors.
Well we saw something of this on our Sunday ride over on the Westside - the new growth on the Fire break and the surrounding forest  - but a stark reminder of the fire two years ago..
.
I took this pic yesterday overlooking what was once a winery in the North Okanagan - you can still see the burned out vehicle in the distance. Also quite a lot of smoke in  the valley from the Forest fires burning.

Another shot showing Mike with his Beta Factory and my estart TRS - it was another hot day with temperatures in the  29-30 range - we were quite surprised to find a large water hole on this trail which got the bikes a bit muddy,

Answer to the last quiz -  The new Trials technique introduced by a young Bernie Shreiber - ‘The full Floater” -a way of getting around tight turns in a section -  of course these days riders use the hop & bop method to achieve the same thing -  this  was correctly guessed by all regular readers. -

Throughout our Trials journey in Western Canada, we have visited a lot of different places, promoting the sport, first around 1971 - when I started in Alberta, followed by showing off the  new TY 250 when I joined Yamaha - putting on demos in far away places like Dawson Creek  BC  and Saskatoon  etc - then later after moving to the Okanagan we helped with Trials in Grand Forks- and Midway plus other neat places to ride with local Trials riders, - Here is a pic from one trip we did to Midway, where Gord Walker  lived and showed us some nice terrain right on the Canada/USA border - this is a pic from one of those days.

The English Ladies Team - looking very happy after winning at the TDN in France - Emma Bristow (on the left) is now a 9 time World Ladies Champion.

And a good action shot of Alex Walton (TRS) at the TDN - The Canadian teams put in a HUGE effort to attend this event, and while they may have struggled a bit in this World Class environment - they gave it their all and did us proud, so hats off to both Teams and support staff,  plus lets not forget all the fund raising that went on behind the scenes headed up by Michael Traves. - No doubt the Quebec lads were a big asset being able to speak French, plus everybody else who helped make this happen. - Unless you have attended one of these  big International Motorcycle events, you have no idea just how mind boggling it is to be involved.

Quiz - What do the three former Factory Trials riders in the front row do now??

Quiz - Who is this rider and what is his “nickname”

Peut être une image de 1 personne, moto tout terrain, moto et texte qui dit ’MICHELIN 66’

Answer to yesterday - Steve Troupe from Ontario - no correct guess.

================================================>

A perfect Trials section - the old way at my old club back in Wales. - While anyone who has set up a Trial knows, finding good terrain with a good variety of sections, is not easy - it takes work!!  - One thing I always tried to avoid, was making sections too long, and with a really difficult obstacle at the very end.  - As Barry used to say a Bridge ( Rock etc) too far. - This can be extremely frustrating to a competitor, who has had a reasonable ride through most of the section - only to fail just before the “End” cards. - Another thing we tried to do was not have more than three difficult obstacles in a section.

TDN 2023 TEAM REPORT
After months of fundraising and training, the 2023 Trials des Nation event is complete, and the riders are making their way home to Canada, proud and passionate for next year!
Showcasing a women’s team for the first time in 15 years, the group that traveled to Auron, France was doubled in riding and support crew from 2022. The women’s team was led by Melissa Andrist
of Victoria, BC, with several CMA national titles under her belt, as well as Katie McGeachy from Vernon, BC, and Jaclyn Delacroix from North Vancouver, BC who are both only a few years into their trials careers. This event was the first world championship event for all the ladies, who showed some nerves on the first loop but came in strong on the second loop to produce good rides from everyone. The scoring, which takes only the top two scores for each section, does not reflect the improvement in every ride from lap 1 to lap 2. The severity of the event was a challenge, and we’d like to thank minders Steve Day and Christy Richards for some great saves. Despite the difficulty, the ladies are undaunted and already planning for 2024.
The men’s 2023 team was Alex Walton, of Mission, BC, Sean Bird of Port Coquitlam, BC, and Michel Fortin-Belanger, of Notre-Dame-Du-Portage, QC. All three riders have had previous experience at the Trial des Nations; although this was the first time they came together as a team. Practice the week before in Ancelle helped the team with working together and preparing for the terrain and altitude of Auron. They were assisted on the day by minders Felix Fortin-Belanger and Jean-Felix Fortin, as well as team manager Paul-Yvan Belanger (who has also represented Canada at previous TdNs). The men’s team finished ahead of 3 teams in the International Class and this result is just a taste of what this team can achieve. It was incredible to watch the team work together, and team Canada was certainly a crowd favorite with lots of cheering and support!
None of this would have happened without sponsorship and support from the trials community, especially our top sponsors and contributors LePage Millwork, True Mechanical, the Canadian Trials Initiative, Canada Pacific Trials Association, Windley Contracting Ltd, Beta Canada, and SpeechTech Ltd. To every Canadian (and further!) trials rider who purchased a t-shirt, came to a training weekend, donated to the Go Fund Me, or participated in anyway to any of our other fundraising events, thank you so much for helping us to showcase the heart, determination, and sportsmanship that the Canadian Trial des Nation team displayed this weekend. To Michael Traves in particular, and the Canadian Trials Initiative, thank you for your hard work in logistics, fundraising, and support of the Trial des Nations team, and your support of trials across Canada in general.
We look forward to the Canadian National on September 30/October 1 in Notre-Dame-du-Portage, Quebec as the starting point for our 2024 Trial des Nations team, and to a new season ahead for everyone.
====================================================>
We came across this while looking for other stuff - - can’t believe it’s  over 20 years  since I  first did the Joss Mountain Ride -
It was Mark Thompson who first got this started, when he called to look at Trials bikes - we had  one of each I think  at the time - but as usual, I asked him what he intended doing - Trial  riding- Competition etc -  - That was when Mark told me about this Mountain  way up above Three Valley Gap - called Joss Mountain. - He told me that in 1920 the BC Forestry Commission had sent a team with pack horses to build a fire lookout on this 8,000 ft peak.
Mark said the trail was still there, but too difficult to make on a regular enduro bike - so that was his reason for looking at a Trials bike.
Eventually I sold Mark a Gasser that we had, but on the condition that he took me on the next trip.
.
This is an account of that climb - perhaps the most breath-taking experience of my life and one that had me going back for more, a total of eight times. The last and most difficult because of my age - was with Stan on my 75th birthday. Perhaps the oldest Trials rider to have his name in the visitors book at age 75 -  ( In 2007 the forestry fitted a new roof and windows in the lookout- plus left a visitors book -( now some Mountain Bikers and hikers seem to think this belongs to them)

After reading all the reports regarding the - lets face it - firing of Adam Raga - the bottom line is that although his  heart is still there -   maybe it’s time for  him to stop  competing at this level before he hurts himself - he now has a family and can enjoy riding Trials for years to come -
In my book - it would be better for Adam to perhaps continue with Jordi at a lower level - who knows even ride the Scottish again ?
I’m sure if the decision was just left to Jordi - things would be different - but when you have partners ?  Whatever is in the future for Adam - we wish him luck.
