While the weather in the Valley this winter has been mild to say the least, in other parts both in Canada and the States – Snow has been the big topic for the past couple of months – even places like Scotland have had plenty of the white stuff – but I thought this pic of a crew out plotting the SSDT route interesting – mainly because of the bike shown – a 1950’s James 197 – that brings back memories. – Back then most owners knew how to keep the bikes running, sometimes having to reset the timing while out on the moor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Did you know that during those early days, some of the old timers thought a rigid rear end was better for a trials bike to get traction!! – of course this all changed when Royal Enfield brought out the “Swinging arm” design which soon got copied by all the factories.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I think the modern day riders tend to be spoiled as the bikes have become so reliable, and few ever think of carrying spare tools or a spark plug when out in the Forestry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something else we don’t often see these days is the all black riding gear – and although the modern trendy one piece suits pioneered by Jordi Tarres may be OK for the younger folk – for the more “Mature” figures they are not really very suitable. – Back in the 1950’s when we started riding, nearly everybody wore a “Barbour suit” a waxed cotton\/waterproof outfit that worked well and lasted a long time – Belstaff the other company of that era, tried to compete by having Sammy Miller promote their gear.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As most of our bloggers know, we have sold various types over the years, but the Wulf gear out of the UK has likely been the best, both for price and quality. Call us if you need more info.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here is another bit of memorabilia – an old program of the ISDT—- ( When it was called a Trial) – In those days – a cloth cap was the usual head gear – often worn back to front so that goggles could be easily adjusted. – Yes that pic below is yours truly in my very first Trial. at age 16. ( and is the image on the very old Outlaw Trial Trophy) I’m wearing the two piece Barbour suit and leather boots bought from the local ex army gear store – quite common after World War Two.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It’s the last Sunday of March 2026 and no snow in the Valley which looks good for the Trial next weekend at Naramata – Not sure who this rider is -or who took the pic – but you can see lots of nice big round rocks if that is your favorite.
