Jon English is one of three Cannucks riding this year and starts at #77 – Nigel Birkett in again which I think is about his 51st time. ( Amazing) – We have printed off the entry list, but this one does not yet have details of machine etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Still on the Scottish theme – Did you know that the battle of Culloden lasted only about one hour, and in that time approx 1500 Jacobites were killed but only about 50 British. !!! – Bonny Prince Charlie fled to France and died as an alcoholic ( no wonder) You can read all about this by clicking onto the link via facebook. -see below<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Battle of Culloden<\/strong>[a]<\/a><\/sup> took place on 16 April 1746, near Inverness<\/a>, in the Scottish Highlands<\/a>. A Jacobite army<\/a> under Charles Edward Stuart<\/a> was decisively defeated by a British<\/a> government force commanded by the Duke of Cumberland<\/a>, thereby ending the Jacobite rising of 1745<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Charles landed in Scotland<\/a> in July 1745, seeking to restore his father James Francis Edward Stuart<\/a> to the British throne. He quickly won control of large parts of Scotland, and an invasion of England<\/a> reached as far south as Derby<\/a> before being forced to turn back. However by April 1746 the Jacobites were short of supplies, facing a superior and better-equipped opponent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Jacobite commanders decided their only option was to stand and fight. When the two armies met at Culloden, the battle was brief, lasting less than an hour, with the Jacobites suffering an overwhelming and bloody defeat. This effectively ended both the 1745 rising and Jacobitism<\/a> as a significant element in British politics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another weird thing – they just unearthed a British canon ball from this historical site!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
