Straightforward, flowing, relatively easy, and you can actually enjoy riding the motorcycle.

At my age, you tend to use enough energy just walking the sections, never mind riding them!

So keep the section challenges sensible, keep your feet up, and most importantly, have fun.

That’s what the sport of trials should be about

While you may think that blurb was written by me – it was in fact posted by Bernie Schreiber on Facebook. – The pic was from an Alberta Trial in 1973, my last year on the 325 Sherpa T, before joining Yamaha Canada.

Perhaps the interesting thing is that my memories of riding that great bike on steep sections, are still quite vivid. However, as an old guy now, I find that riding the old twin-shocks pretty bad and can’t wait to jump on one of my new bikes.

Old timers, may remember that the Spanish bikes had brakes that were useless after the first water section, so we fitted what they called a decompressor !! this was used on steep downhills and along with careful throttle control could be managed quite well.

Of course the bikes that are now used in Trials like the Costa Brava, are a far cry from the production models we had back in the day – they have all been fitted with the latest suspension and have motors that are very “Trick” – not to mention the latest grippy tires.- Obviously, this would throw a different light on how the bikes perform – they even have brakes and clutches that work!!!

It was back in 1985 that Steve Day showed me the new technique of using the clutch, on the TY mono – something that I have done ever since. – Some may recall how Barry would yell at newbies at training sessions “finger on the clutch”

============================================

Answer to the last quiz was – Mick Andrews doing a demo at Blackfoot Park in Calgary, I looked after the set up and remember hauling a bunch of rocks up from near the train tracks, and building sections into some of the sandy climbs. -Mick used Bobby T’s TY 250 after removing the end silencer – he didn’t like the bars I had on my TY demo. – As many will recall, that cross Canada trip by Mick, did a lot to promote both Yamaha and Trials. – Correct answers came from Pete Varey, Jack Chant, Harold Pospisil and Brett Clark.

Quiz today. Guess who ? The one on the top step might be difficult!!

=======================================

Ryan Young took the win at the two Day Ute Cup on the new Beta Sincro 300. – First competition since joining Beta USA – Great ride buddy.

Looks like they had a big entry for this Trial – obviously very popular.

===========================================

========================================== As we get older, I’ve found that riding traditionally designed trials sections is simply the most fun.
