Well! – it looks like it’s going to be a stormy weekend for the West Coast – Trials in Victoria and Vancouver. – Best of luck to all the riders at the TRS sponsored event at Ioco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of course we are not unfamiliar with running events in bad weather – in fact I can’t recall any major Trial we ever hosted that the weatherman, didn’t throw us a curve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When we first starting doing the Trials thing in Alberta – I sometimes got asked – is the Trial still on? and of course we always replied that it was – rain, hail, snow – all added to the challenge – BUT the secret was always knowing “What was possible” and what would need to be downsized in degree of difficulty – – As many old timers will remember, we hosted the very first Canadian World Round back in 1975 – and after great weather, we had freak rain storms !! the day before the event. – What a head game to try and make this a success. !! Somehow we managed it, and I think we received some very good comments from the Europeans – especially Yrjo Vesterinen and Malcolm Rathmell – Mick I think was in a bit of a downer as he did not expect the event to be so difficult. – I took Mick, Jill and Malcolm for dinner at the Calgary Tower restaurant after the trial which they enjoyed – Jill was giving Mick the gears, telling him he hadn’t been practicing enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However I think we paved the way for future World Trials in Canada – ( Now unlikely to be on the FIM Schedule due to the cost)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Answer to the last quiz – on the left – Rick Siemens ( Super Hunky) and the great Joel Robert – both now gone .(rip) – It was Jack Chant from Alberta who first got this – some guessed part of the quiz!!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As most Photographers will tell you – “Timing is everything” but being in the right place at the right time is critical. – Sadly Gerry Scott was later killed while Scrambling in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Frightening moment in June 1965 at a Wednesday evening scramble sponsored by local brewers Eldridge Pope at Weymouth. Jerry Scott arriving at a geat rate of knots on his Cheney BSA Gold Star in the Experts race, clips the rear end of Bill Cawte’s 250 Metisse and has his right arm and foot wrenched from his bike! Fortunately Jerry survived to win the main Devenish Trophy race later in the evening.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Somebody just posted this pic of Martin Lampkin – who described himself as being “The worst of the the lot” – meaning the top riders of that era – a humble man for sure, and glad we got to meet him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
