You could call this a typical day riding in Scotland !!

So Gary MacDonald took the win in the Two day Scottish Pre-65 Trial - the second year in a row, this time on a lovely sounding 350 Triumph twin. - While the old bikes are heavy - Gary showed his ability earlier in the week by doing “Flick-Turns” on the big bike, near the parking lot.

Here are the Results - You will note that a few riders seem to have lost zero points, so not sure how they figured it all out.

Still in Scotland -Dougie Lampkin was busy signing copies of his new book - the first lot sold in under an hour.

Saturday, Harold (Turk) Perepalkin, arrived from Victoria, to pick up his 2018 Beta Evo 200 - Turk is downsizing from his Evo 300, which he uses mainly as a trail bike on Vancouver Island.  - Today we will get out for our first ride of the year at Summerland - should be a “Hoot” ( Turk & myself have talked about doing this ride for years)
Turk has a rather unique way of transporting his bike in and out of his small Honda - he uses a wheel-barrow  -wheel. !!! -

The Spanish Moto GP is on live as I hit the keyboard this morning, but there is a report that both Factory Ducati riders and Dani Pedrosa are out with a massive crash at turn 6 - more news later.

Marquez does it again - taking the win in Jerez Spain

On Friday Morning, we had a quick visit from Chris Hrabb, who was on route to the Coast for some fun riding on his Husky - He showed me the new Lecton Carb he had fitted, while in Moab, and was really impressed with the improvement - I remarked that I thought it was Kenny Roberta, who started Importing these Stateside, but the man to contact in Canada is Helmut Clasen - if there are three things that Helmut  raves about it is Zundapp bikes, Opti oil, and Lectron carbs.

After Chris left, I made a quick trip to Kelowna, to pick up the Section Cards from the Printers - traffic was brutal, as always in the Valley, especially on Fridays now that the warm weather is here.

It was a gorgeous day in the OK Valley on Friday, so with Josef in Town, we decided to play hooky and go for an afternoon ride. - I had a new 280 TRS to test ride so didn’t need too much nudging.

We took the short drive out to Yankee Flats ( 20 mins from my place) and headed up the hill for the first time this year. - After playing around on a few sections. I led Josef on the long trail that eventually comes out on the Power line - this proved to be really a lot of fun, as the snow-melt had new creeks to pick a way up through the rocks, like a very long section in places. - The TRS feels like such a lightweight and is so easy to ride, as you can see by my open necked jacket - it was warm ( should have worn a T shirt like Josef.)

Today looks like another busy day - Brittany is stopping by with her TRS for me to check it over - then Harold      ( Turk) from Victoria,  is due to arrive around noon to pick up his new Evo 200 - ( Better give that one last check)

After that who knows, but a ride will happen for sure early Sunday - Maybe Summerland - this time I will take the Beta out. ( then I’ll have two muddy bikes to wash !!)

Breaking News - There has been a fire at the Gas Gas Factory in Barcelona - no details on the damage as yet.

The Gas Gas motorcycle factory has suffered an intense fire overnight, seriously damaging the building.

The local Salt fire service declared the fire at 2.55am and say firefighters were on the scene working through dawn in Northern Spain.

The Gas Gas factory is in a 10,000-square-meter warehouse and because of the timing was completely isolated, so no evacuation was required. Nor has there been any injured person - reports say.

The causes are not yet known but affects the northern part of the factory which reports say is bad enough for the roof to have dropped in.More news when we get it.

More Beta News ( Not especially good by the sound of it)

3rd May, 2018 | Beta Racing

Betamotor Italy has decided to change importers for Australia.  Beta Racing after importing the Beta trials range for 29 years will no longer be the importer.  No reason has been given for this decision.  The new importer is Patrick Lowry.  He will import the Enduro and Trials models.  Currently Lowry Australia imports the YCF Minibike from China.  Before that Patrick worked for Paul Feeneys when they imported the Husqvarna enduro bikes.

After importing Beta for such a long period, Beta Racing has built up an enormous range of spare parts for TR, Zero, Techno, REV3 and EVO models as well as many other models.  As Lowry’s did not want to purchase our entire stock of spare parts, Beta Racing will remain in business supplying spare parts, servicing and repairs as well as giving technical advice.  Beta Racing – David Ryan, Hugh Harvie and Trevor Campbell have a combined total of 86 years’ experience in Trials, so we intend to continue to make a contribution.

I have made many great friends in Trials and had a great relationship with many Beta owners.  This has been the most rewarding part of operating Beta Racing.  We will still be involved in competing in this great sport and I very much look forward to continuing those great relationships we have had with so many people in Trials.  I would personally like to thank all those trials people out there who have supported Beta Racing over such a long period and I would like to wish them every success for the future.

A tribute to Alan Clews: 1938-2018

World renowned motorcycle designer Alan Clews sadly passed away on May 2nd 2018. Just shy of his 80th birthday, Alan continued to play an active role within CCM, as he had done over the past 47 years.

In the 70’s Alan blazed a trail across the motocross Grand Prix’s of the world, with the Bolton based firm punching well above its weight, dishing out bloody noses to many of the European and Japanese factory works teams.

It was this ability that endeared him and his riders to motorcycle enthusiasts across the globe and Alan’s legendary 4-stroke dirt bikes would become known as “The Rolling Thunder”.

His final project would see him working his magic on CCM’s latest model, The Spitfire.

Alan was in the midst of a “stroked” version of the Spitfire’s 600cc engine when he was taken ill and tragically he will no longer see this labour of love brought to its conclusion, however everyone here at CCM are committed to completing this, his final legacy, in his honour.

Check out this video - a reason I always tell people to have a minder at the back as well as on top,

The 2018 Pre 65 Scottish Two Day Trial, will be going strong, as I hit the keys this morning. Last year it was won by local lad Gary MacDonald on a BSA Bantam. - This year he will ride a 350 Triumph twin. Weather is a bit rainy so far.

Now we are into the first week of May - it’s time to remind everybody about the 31st running of the Outlaw Trial at Scotch Creek. - This is a WTC Sanctioned event, but riders only need to pay the Entry fee of $20.00 per day - no club or associations to join, just come out, ride - Free camping is available at the start, which this year is in a new area ( see poster) Any questions please shoot me an email or phone.

For this year, we have a slight change in the Class format, electing to have the same as they did at the first round at Ioco - This will simplify results. - Note. - We have Expert,Advanced,Snr 45,Inter,Sportsman,Junior plus a ladies class.

It’s nice to see some of the old memorabilia ob the Social network - here is a great shot ( not sure who took the pic) of Malcolm Davies who along with his brother was a regular winner at both Scrambles and Trials, he was the British 250cc Champion a number of times. He was sadly killed while competing in a Trial, when a car ran into him while he was filling up with Petrol. - A very Tragic loss. - But check out this feet up style on the works Greeves.

While we hear a lot of talk about Pipelines these days in BC and Alberta - Next week the only one that Trials riders will be interested in is the Famous one just outside Kinlochleven  in Scotland.  - Clean rides are not common on this old section, even on the modern bikes. Glad to say I’ve watched the action from here a couple of times over the years. - The pipes are from an old Alcan plant, funneling water from the top of the Mountain.

Here is a pic of Stan from last year - no Canadian riders entered this year. ( Pic by Dave Butler)

I saw today that two well known Trials guys just suffered heart attacks - luckily both Kip Webb ( Cody’s Dad) and Steve Troupe of Ontario, made it to the hospital in time. Best wishes go out to both.

Another quite busy day on Wednesday - sorting parts & other stuff, before another nice TRS arrived after lunch - this is a 280 and is not sold at this time, so we might just keep it as a demo.

News from the World of Moto GP

Johann Zarco has today been announced as Pol Espargaro’s teammate at Red Bull KTM Factory Racing for 2019 and 2020, confirming the strong rumors that had surrounded the Frenchman’s ride for 2019 and beyond.

This video clip celebrates  the life of Road Racing Legend Geoff Duke  - As a teenager, I was lucky enough to shake his hand when he attended our local club annual dinner.- then later was in a Time Trial near Chester, which he won on a Ariel Cub special - I was resting on the side of a really muddy part of the course when he passed me. Incredibly , our Team got on the Podium that day, but it was so tough, I didn’t even wash my bike for a week.

While riding Trials competitions and practicing sections can be a lot of fun, perhaps one of the most popular uses for a Trials bike, is to use it like mountain goat, to get to places that few people get to see.

We have heard from Shane, that the work party at Scotch Creek, went well last Sunday after the rain eased up, Ross has 16 sections all taped.  Once again we thank everybody for keeping the Outlaw Trial going - this is year #31.

Not a great way to start the trip to Scotland for the Team vertigo transporter.

I’m a bit late getting to the keyboard today - unusual for me to sleep in - but we had the family over for dinner last night, and after a very hectic couple of weeks with bike sales/deliveries etc, I guess my body was trying to tell me something.

Looking out the window, the sun is already shimmering across Swan lake, and temperatures could be in the +20’s today - great for most, except for the folk who are battling floods from the snow melt.

Yesterday, Jamie McGregor from Hamilton Ontario, stopped by for a visit - he was in the area visiting his son, who is working in Revelstoke. - We were able to share a lot of Trials stories, plus Jamie helped me uncrate a new TRS that showed up. - He is a buddy of Jordan Szoke and is considering selling his Sherco to try one of the latest Jordi Tarres wonders .  After a short ride in the backyard, I think he is sold.

This isn’t Trials, but what a great Speedway shot taken by Andy Garner in the UK -

And in case you hadn’t noticed - there is a nice bike in this picture !!!

Looking ahead to next week - the question is ( at least one of them) is “Will Dougie Lampkin do it again?”  and will the weather be good like last year ( very unlikely)
