The Motorcycle Mag – just arrived
Although as we have said before – this mag does not yet cover the Trials market, it is always chock full of great articles on touring and testing various bikes, often by our own Trials gal Emily Roberts. – It was after reading Em’s article on travelling and lost luggage, that I was reminded of some of my similar experiences, when working for Yamaha Canada.
The one that sticks in my mind today, is a Cross Canada trip I did putting on a Dealer sales seminar – Starting off in Vancouver, I plane hopped across the Country with my final destination being St Johns Newfoundland!!!! Yes this was very tiring, plus I had to take a bunch of audio visual equipment with me.
All went fairly smoothly, until our flight got diverted into Gander, because of thick fog!! – The Airline had coaches to take us the 500km overnight to St Johns. – that is except for me, because it took time to collect all by gear – the last nice comfy coach was full and I was ushered into a yellow school bus along a few other unlucky souls.
As you can imagine, I was quite tired, and parked myself at the rear of the bus, where there was more room for my gear, and soon I dozed off, only to be suddenly awakened as my head hit the overhead rack, as we encountered the first of many frost heaves in the road.!! – No sleep on that route – like Em I should have had my helmet with me.
When we arrived in foggy and snowed in St Johns, I noticed the lights of my Motel up ahead, and rushed to tell the driver, – Sorry sir he said, I have to take everybody to the airport!!!!
This meant my final journey would be by cab – a nice young guy, who looking in his rear view mirror, enquired “First time on the Island sir?” – Yes I replied – and the bloody last.
To cap it off I was stranded there for for days until the fog lifted. But at least Yamaha paid for a first class ticket for me back to Calgary, and they didn’t lose my luggage.!!
Footnote! We did find the “Newfies” all very friendly and hospitable.

And finally – another Mountain Memory – This one from 7,000ft above Trout Lake BC on the Beta Evo 200 (It ran flawlessly without any adjustments- as did the rider!!)
