Back in the day when this was called “Scrambling” – the big British singles were the most popular – but soon the lightweight villiers powered two strokes came on the scene – the DOT was perhaps the one to beat, as the Earles type front forks were great for this type of rough terrain. – we nearly bought one in the mid 50’s, but as we rode mostly trials, we found the heavy steering not the best for tight stuff, and stayed with the James. – Can you imagine having about 4″ suspension travel, when now it’s more like 12-14″ on MX bikes – – no wonder “Tank slappers” were often seen at the local tracks.
