Hard to believe that back on this day in 1944, thousands of Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy, and thousands of them, never left. – What is even harder to believe, is that we have new dictators waging wars, none of whom likely even remembers the horrors of those Nazi years. – When will they ever learn?
Here’s a post we saw on FB – one of many –
As you take the kids to football this morning, as you pop to the supermarket, as you enjoy your tea and toast, read a paper, discuss what you’ll have for dinner…. spare a thought for the tens of thousands of young men who were storming the D-Day beaches 82 years ago today.
By the end of the day, over 160,000 Allied troops and 6,000 vehicles had crossed the Channel. The Allies had established a foothold on the beaches of Normandy. But they still had to break out, push the Germans back and liberate France.
The British and Canadians suffered 84,000 casualties, and the Americans 125,000 over the course of the entire Normandy campaign. German losses were around 400,000.
The truly beautiful British Normandy Memorial records the names of the 22,540 servicemen and women under British command who fell on D-Day and during the Battle of Normandy in the summer of 1944
( I was just 7 years old at time. )

In Motorcycle news. Michael Dunlop has now won 36 TT races – a record which surpasses his uncle Joey’s by 10 races. – an incredible achievement, especially when you consider that his father and brother and Uncle Joey, were all killed road racing, – I have a VHS video called the Irish Road Racers, which tells the story of how Joey got started racing, along with his buddies, Mervin and Frank ( both killed) – These riders really are living in a different Motorcycle World.
Of course you have to wonder about other sports, like the one where the top guys get paid millions for knocking a small ball into a bunch of holes with a stick (lol)
