Answer to the last quiz was – Charles ( Custard) Cuthard only Roger Boothroyd got that –

Quiz today Guess who ?

============================================

Our old friend Walt Healy, had a great saying when talking to people who he really did not agree with, but would never upset – it was – “Well whatever turns ya on” – I remembered this when looking at the MX style qualifying section used at the UK FIM World trial. – Yes spectacular, but is this really how the sport should be shown to the public? – I just hope none of our organizers get the idea to do this. – A Trial is a Trial – A Race is a Race – Lets keep them separate.

==========================================

They are getting good entries at some of these events, but so did we at that first World Round we put on Alberta in 1975 – and that had just one class, with sections possible for club riders.

Here is Harry Hemmo in that hi speed qualifier – spectacular yes but what if a rider crashes? and is seriously hurt? I don’t like or agree with this format for Trials. but I’m just an old guy right?

However, not sure if anybody remembers the name Gary Baily ? he was the guy who used to set up all the Super Cross tracks Stateside – He had one really big jump that our MX riders might recall, but his son David who was a top Pro rider at that time, got it a bit wrong and ended up in a wheel chair. -Can you imagine how he must have felt after that? They then changed that style of jump!!! – A very sad way to end up.

If we continue to advertise our sport as something that requires abilities to hop from rock to rock – I fear we are doomed.

=====================================

Again I would mention that it takes an awful lot of experience to host a National or World Trial – I have lost count of the number of events that I’ve put on, including that very first FIM World Trial in 1975. – and for sure I have made lots of mistakes, but apart from Bill Sparks at one National, and Mark O’Neil at Scotch Creek – I can’t recall any other injuries. ( Mark was not in a section)

Again the bottom line for mentioning all this – is because the young guys think they are invincible – ( The Sammy flying shows) – I admire what they do, but the crazy stuff should be left out of club trials – and that is my opinion.

============================================

Another point I would like to raise, is the cost to enter any of these World Trials ? Did you know that the FIM require any organizer to come up with HUGE amount of cash, before they will grant a Sanction??? ( Most clubs cannot afford that)

So what I’m really saying today – is If Trials riding is to continue for the masses – we need to keep things simple, a nice ride out in the Country – not a head game in a parking lot!!
