Watching the You tube videos of the Scott, reminded me of the first “Time Trial” that I rode in Wales – Called “The Lecruddy Struggle” – That’s me at age 16 in the spotted cap!! – ( Yup that guy was stuck pretty good) – I wonder how many riders are still around to remember the Scott Trials we ran in Alberta in the 1970’s?
I think I only ever rode one other Time Trial in the UK, which was won by World Champion Geoff Duke – yes he passed me. ( not surprising on a Factory Ariel)

Scott Trial in the books again. What a day it is. They don’t call it the toughest trial for nothin’. It is damned hard let me tell you. I wish more people in North America were aware of it. You have to experience it though to understand I think. I was able to complete the whole course of 76 sections and 80 miles of moors and rivers and crossed the finish line for the first time in three tries which felt really good. The bike only shuts off for 1 min at a time at the 7 fuel stops. the rest of the time you are going as hard as you possibly can. My time was 7h 45min which is a long day on the pegs let me tell you. To put it in perspective for some of you it’s like doing an 7.5 hour test at the Corduroy, for me it’s the same intensity. You have to stay within 2.5 hours of the leaders time and unfortunately I was outside of that. So I am not an official finisher and won’t get a Scott certificate. BUT… I am still really HAPPY to have gotten around the full course this year and I’ve improved my result each year. So I might have to go back for another go.
It is hard to put into words how cool and special this event is. It’s in the heart of the home of our sport. Hundreds of people come out to watch and they are all super knowledgable and they give you a cheer and a clap for a good ride and show you the line and offer you sweets or water. The Richmond club puts in a huge effort to put it all together and it is truly appreciated. The top riders go by you like you’re nailed to the floor and it’s impressive. Several of them train specifically for this one day of the year. If you have seen the videos you might think the sections are easy but they are not. They took 20 points off Adam Raga this year. I could go on and on and probably will if you ask me in person, but I just think it’s really cool and I hope it gets on more peoples radar from this side of the Atlantic.
Huge thanks to all my friends who fed and watered me during the trial. James for bringing the bike up and waiting around for me. Ollie for the FLY Miro gear. Tom, Alice, Connor. Some old and new friends for encouragement along the way and showing you the line etc. All really appreciated. I know it’s a long post you’d probably think I won the thing if you didn’t know better. If you have read this far you either love trials or are over the age of 25

Here is a happy group at the Shuswap Trial the Red Deer lads always have a really great time at our BC Trials. This one hosted as usual by Martin and Julie, was one of the best, complete with live music around the campfire and later in the large shop – even some dancing. – A great way to wrap up our season.
