Yesterday was the anniversary of the first day in the Battle of Britain, it was 1940, a time when England stood alone against the Nazi Empire, a time when I was only 3 years old.
As we check our TV screens these days, we see nothing but stories of War and destruction, brought on by a new generation of dictators, with absolutely no regard or knowledge of the reality that a World War brings to people. –
Somebody once said that if you put all the Dictators in the front line of any conflict, there would be no wars, and perhaps this would be true.
I have mentioned before that as a child with 2 sisters and 2 brothers, we had a busy household after our Dad went off to the war, however, in spite of that, Mum took in a couple of young girls from London, who had been evacuated. -A total of seven kids – Yes we had a lot of fights!!
Because we had also been evacuated to Wales in 1939, and because we were so young, we never really did understand how grave the situation was, at school we sometimes learned that one of our friends had lost their Dad, but when you are kids, you never really took it all in, even when we saw the German bomber going low over our school on fire, then crashing not far away.
We had a Spitfire base not far from our village, so we saw the aircraft, flying overhead, and naturally as a young lad, thought this was very exciting.
This is a photo of Pilots saying a prayer, having breakfast before taking off in the Battle of Britain. For many, the final time.
– Did you know that Senator Joe Kennedy, father to John F – said in 1940, that “Britain was finished” – Then came that Battle when the Commonwealth Pilots joined the RAF, and Winston Churchill made that famous speech.
